Compassion in Action, Helping Families Heal

After Sheila passed, Mel made it his mission to honor his wife’s legacy. With the compassionate support of MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital’s Home Health and Hospice services, Mel was able to be by Sheila’s side during her final days – a gift he holds close to his heart.

In the months that followed, Mel joined a hospice-led bereavement group designed for those navigating the recent loss of a loved one. He also poured his energy into a deeply personal project: building a labyrinth on his church’s property in Sheila’s memory. The space offers visitors a quiet place for reflection, remembrance, and peace.

Another meaningful tradition for Mel has been attending the annual Celebration of Life event, held in May at Kissel Park. Open to families grieving the loss of a loved one, the event brings together community members and hospice staff for an afternoon of remembrance and connection.

“We extend invitations to families throughout the community who have lost loved ones in the last year,” shares Jeff Davis, hospice bereavement counselor. “It can be very comforting to pause and remember a loved one — especially with others who understand.”

The event includes a short program led by a hospice chaplain, followed by a remembrance walk and a shared picnic meal. It’s a space for healing, reflection, and community.

“It’s a really beautiful time for connection,” Jeff says. “This event becomes a touchpoint for grief – helping people move from sadness to memory, and eventually to support.”

Your generosity helps Yakima Memorial Hospital’s Home Health and Hospice team create spaces for remembrance and connection – where families come together to honor their loved ones and find comfort in community.
