In an age of technology where an overwhelming amount of information is just a click away, nothing compares to the individualized attention from a trusted expert, ready and willing to guide and teach.
At MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital, childbirth education classes offer that in-person connection. Led by Family Birth Center nurses, these hands-on classes provide tools and reassurance for expectant moms and their partners.
“We help parents prepare before labor begins, before they’re overwhelmed,” says Erika Blumenthal, a nurse and lactation consultant. “We walk them through what to expect at the hospital and what life will be like at home.”
The series includes childbirth education, baby basics, and breastfeeding classes, all offered throughout the year in one-and-two-day formats. And thanks to your donations, many families can attend at low to no cost.
“If you’re a pregnant mom here in the Valley, we have excellent resources for you to feel empowered and ready to deliver and care for your baby,” shares Rose Traylor, a childbirth education coordinator.
The instructors often reunite with new parents during the delivery process. “It’s so fun when someone says, ‘Hey, you taught our class!’” nurse Jen Casteel says. “We’re part of their journey from the classroom to the delivery room.”
These classes are more than education—they’re a source of calm in a time of uncertainty. “We don’t just teach,” Erika adds. “We listen, we encourage, and we care.”
