Love, Legacy, and a Peaceful Passing: Kenneth’s Final Journey

Kenneth Cooper, a decorated Army veteran, devoted family man, dog lover, and namesake to both his son and grandson, made three requests as he neared the end of his life: He wanted to see his grandson, K.C., marry his sweetheart, Kelli; He wanted to pass at home, watching the birds outside his window with his dog by his side; And if time allowed, he hoped to see his granddaughter graduate from nursing school.

In late July, Kenneth was hospitalized with pneumonia. When the care team at MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital explained that his time was short and hospice was the next step, the family, which includes two hospice nurses, jumped into action to honor his wishes.

K.C. and Kelli decided to marry right there in Kenneth’s hospital room. Their wedding was planned for September, but with the help of loved ones, Kelli retrieved her dress, and friends and family prepared a bouquet and cake. On July 30, in room 261, surrounded by close family, they exchanged vows.

“It was such a special day,” Kelli shares. “We started with a pinning ceremony to honor Kenneth’s service as a lieutenant colonel in the army with a Purple Heart and Bronze Stars. He was not expecting it, and it meant everything to him. Then Dan, our hospice chaplain, married us. We laughed a little, cried a lot, and it is the most special memory we’ll carry with us for the rest of our lives.”

Shortly after the ceremony, Kenneth returned home. He passed peacefully, just as he wished, with family nearby, his dog at his side, and the birds outside his window.

“We lovingly joke that we got two of his three requests,” Kimberly, his daughter-in-law, shares. “We miss him immensely. He was determined to the end and loved being with his family.” His granddaughter will graduate from nursing school this spring.

Because of you, families like Kenneth’s experience dignity, comfort, and love at life’s end. Your generosity makes these moments possible.
